Show season is underway but thankfully I have no show this weekend. I tackled another cityscape at dusk. I keep getting looser and looser. Just seeing shapes appear as dabs of color is quite fulfilling at the moment. My inner voices seem happy with the current approach. It's interesting that I have an old piece very similar to this one in style that I see everyday. I didn't feel too strongly about before but after being on the road and seeing it with fresh eyes I think it works. Guess it's going on the road.......

Chester County Studio Tour

Just a friendly reminder that I will be exhibiting as part of the Chester County Studio tour this weekend May 19-20. I will be at the David Oleski Property alongside the beautiful pond. Come out and see artwork and enjoy scenery, food and refreshments!

Brandywine Museum

This is a new piece I did of The Brandywine Museum in Chaddsford Pa. It is an impressive structure that I couldn't resist tackling with paint. There are many trees that I left out. They wouldn't have helped in conveying the grandeur of this place.

Two new pieces that I dug out of my head and heart. The top one is from observation the bottom one is channeling cows yet again from the depths of my memory.

I've been busy framing for the new season that starts in Richmond VA. first week in may. The collection is coming together nicely.

Thick paint

After a winter that never was it still felt like the "off season". With shows approaching I decided to lay some thick paint with the knife. A ressurection of sorts I suppose. The brushes will reappear. I just needed that feeling of knife work.

so here is a new 36x48. I've attached a 2 foot section of lattice wood to a 3" wide brush. It gives me the same looseness as a 1" brush on a small (6") panel. I like loose. This piece was done mostly with this rig. I did throw in some 2" brush strokes. Been very busy organizing shows and schedules. It looks to be a promising year with some new venues being added to my schedule. Looking forward to hitting the road!

A new big version of a smaller piece. Lots of scraping and dripping. This piece felt like rewarded work.

I struggled with this one. Trying to catch the feeling of commuting in the city. Feeling the rails with a city skyline approaching. Anticipation. For those that have been to Chicago, You will appreciate the idea of train travel over sitting in traffic! I digress. Will build on this theme somehow.

Another cityscape albeit a small one. Focusing again on the energy of a city and traffic not worrying about detail. A city in the rain is a blur of light at night.

Chincoteague Virginia Paintings

Did this one from a photo stored on the laptop from fall Chincoteague excursion. Plein air work was fun but the skeeters were eating me alive so I took some snapshots to work from.

A new cityscape in the rain. I can't emphasize my attraction to tearing down the subject. Repetition of form is apparent.

This was the second piece I did on day one at Chadds Ford. Thankfully it sold at the reception!

 This one I did first on Friday. Friday the sun was out so I worked very hard. It's a good thing. Saturday was overcast and flat light. I had planned on painting a particular structure in sunlight "the four dogs tavern in Marshalton" but alas the light wasn't there. I made a mistake because there was very nice atmosphere and aerial perspective in the morning had I chosen a landscape!

Schuylkill Bridge

This is a scene of a bridge down by Philly that I've been itching to paint. It could easily be Harrisburg as we have so many bridges. They are always a challenge to paint. I'm trying these panels from Raphael but they don't compare to the sourcetek panels. The Raphael panels lack tooth. At least the ones I got. Sometimes I like a smooth surface but not lately.

So here I tackle an insane amount of detail of a marine scene in Annapolis. Of course I show no detail. The whole point is to capture a time of day. To attempt and paint every boat would be ridiculous. I only try to convey the atmosphere.
